Case Study | PERSIST Mental Health Project

The Challenge

Mental health is in the public conversation more than ever before — but those who work in politics, both elected officials and staff, face a unique set of challenges to their wellbeing.

This is an issue for everyone. Because when decision-makers at all levels of government are struggling with their mental health, our democracy and governance suffer too.

The Work

In January 2021, Emile launched the PERSIST Project — a campaign to raise awareness of the importance of mental health in politics and public life.

Together with fellow former political staffer Dale Richardson, Emile interviewed prominent political figures on the PERSIST Podcast including former BC Premier Christy Clark, Nunavut NDP MP Mumilaaq Qaqqaq, and a diverse number of former staffers.

The Outcome

The PERSIST Project tapped into an undercurrent of concern among political practitioners about the state of mental health in Canadian public life, garnering thousands of listens and views across platforms, and generating significant earned media coverage.
