Case Study | Brane Digital Asset Custody

The Challenge

Brane Capital, a financial technology company based in Ottawa, was seeking a regulatory pathway to become Canada’s leading custodian for digital assets.

The Work

As the executive responsible for communications, government relations, and regulatory affairs, Emile coordinated Brane’s leadership team, outside legal counsel, and consultant lobbyists to achieve key regulatory approvals for the establishment of an Alberta-based trust company.

Navigating a complex and rapidly evolving area of financial policy, Emile established Brane’s new office in Calgary, developed its stakeholder engagement strategy in Alberta, and drove recruitment and onboarding of the new entity’s board of directors — including leaders from Alberta’s tech, legal, business, and Indigenous communities.

The Outcome

Brane’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Brane Trust Company Ltd., was granted letters patent by Alberta’s finance minister in October 2021, and is now in the process of being acquired by Wellfield Technologies.

The company has received extensive media coverage and widespread recognition, including as of Canada’s Best and Brightest Companies on the Canadian Business New Innovators List, and one of Canada’s Best Workplaces™ .
